Section 1: To those unfamiliar with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), the operation principle is illustrated in Fig. 1. The diagram shows operation principle of online UPS. Firstly, rectifier converts alternating current (AC) from mains supply to high voltage direct current (DC), it then uses the DC supply to provide charging current for back up batteries which are usually connected in series. The DC supply is also used by inverter to provide near perfect sinusoidal waveforms of AC current to output load.

Section 2: In order to determine why UPS always start in back up mode i.e. the rectifier not ON, batteries discharge current to inverter in order to provide powe for output load. Firstly, locate the COMPARATOR circuits near rectifier module (the rectifier module can be easily recognized by huge heatsink). Then, test the comparators and associated discrete components connected with it. Scrutinize semiconductors such as diodes. Lastly, replace any faulty parts. Restart the UPS and judge the results. Usually, the problem could be fixed already. If not, try other methods which could hasten the troubleshooting process.

Fig. 2 shows example of comparator IC mounted in actual UPS board.
